What is Stress?

Sometimes, this stress response can be appropriate or even beneficial reaction. However, there can be times when stress becomes excessive and too much to deal with. Stress is a response to a threat in a situation, where anxiety is a reaction to the stress.
Types of Stress
There are 3 different types of stress – Acute, Episodic, chronic.
Acute Stress – Acute stress is most common types of stress. We experience acute stress multiple times throughout the day. This is a mental health condition that can occur immediately after a traumatic event. A person with acute stress disorder may experience difficulty in concentrating. During an acute stress response, the autonomic nervous system is activated and the body experiences increased levels of cortisol, adrenaline and other hormones that produce an increased heart rate, quickened breathing rate, and higher blood pressure. The symptom of dissociation, which reflects a perceived detachment of the mind from the emotional state or even the body, is a critical feature.
Episodic Stress – Acute stress that is suffered too frequently is called episodic stress. This stress occurs when someone gets frequent bouts of acute stress. People with this types of stress will oftentimes take on more responsibilities and projects than they can handle. Negative health effects are persistent in people with episodic acute stress. It may be hard for people with this type of stress to change their lifestyle, as they accept stress as a part of life. For example, someone may miss a deadline at work and immediately, even if the boss of that person is too cool, but that person starts thinking that maybe he/she will become homeless or jobless. For that person the panic is reasonable but in reality its hurting him/her.
Chronic Stress – Chronic Stress is a biological response to demanding situations. It causes the body to release hormones, such as cortisol and adrenaline. This means that the body remains in a constant state of physiological arousal. It affects virtually every system in the body, either directly or indirectly. This types of stress that lasts for a longer period of time. You may have chronic stress if you have money problems, an unhappy marriage, or trouble at work. Any type of stress that goes on for weeks or months is chronic stress. Many factors can trigger a stress response, including dangerous situations and psychological pressures, such as work deadlines, exams, and sporting events.
Signs of Stress
Stress can affect all aspects of your life, including your emotions, behaviors, thinking ability, and physical health. No part of the body is immune. You may think illness is to blame for that irritating headache, your frequent insomnia or your decreased productivity at work. But stress may actually be the cause. Sometimes you might be able to tell right away when you’re feeling under stress, but other times you might keep going without recognizing the signs. It can affect the whole way you behave.
Common Symptoms of Stress –
- Frequent headaches
- Frequent blushing, sweating
- Cold or sweaty hands, feet
- Difficulty concentrating, racing thoughts
- Difficulty in making decisions
- Feelings of loneliness or worthlessness
- Obsessive or compulsive behavior
- Excess anxiety, worry, guilt, nervousness
- Increased anger, frustration,
- Weight gain or loss without diet
How to Manage Stress ?
If you have stress symptoms, taking steps to manage your stress can have many health benefits. Explore stress management strategies, such as:
- Keep a positive attitude.
- Set limits appropriately and say no to requests that would create excessive stress in your life.
- Get enough rest and sleep. Your body needs time to recover from stressful events.
- Getting regular physical activity
- Spending time with family and friends
- Practicing relaxation techniques, such as deep breathing, meditation, yoga, tai chi or massage.
- Accept that there are events that you cannot control.
- Set limits appropriately and learn to say no to requests that would create excessive stress in your life.
- Don’t rely on alcohol, drugs, or compulsive behaviors to reduce stress.
- Eat healthy, well-balanced meals.
Few more methods for Managing stress include –
- Understanding the signs and symptoms – These indications can vary, but if a person can recognize their own signals of stress, they will be better able to manage them.
- Trying mindfulness – People who practice this form of meditation use breathing and thought techniques to create an awareness of their body and surroundings.
- Improving sleeps quality – Getting too little sleep or sleep of poor quality can contribute to stress. Try to get at least 7 hours every night, and set regular times for going to sleep and waking up.
By listening to music, reading a book, taking a warm bath, or meditating will also help you to manage your stress level.
Yoga will be very helpful to reduce stress level
